Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) used

Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) is used to treat several heart conditions in which there is an unusually fast heart beat or tachycardia, such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia; arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm, including atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation, which occur in the atria or upper chambers of the heart, and extrasystole, which is a premature contraction of the heart. Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) is also used to treat acute hypertension (high blood pressure), to lower blood pressure in people who are at risk of cardiovascular disease due to high blood pressure. Other conditions that Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) is used for include acute coronary insufficiency, which is poor blood flow to the heart, and to prevent certain heart problems occurring during surgery, causing the heart to generate abnormal heartbeats.

Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) work

Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) contains verapamil, which is a calcium channel blocker that inhibits the inflow of calcium ions across specific calcium channels in the cell membrane into smooth muscle cells of the heart (myocardium) and blood vessel walls (only arteries). Calcium is needed for smooth muscle cells to contract, so by blocking calcium channels, smooth muscle cell contraction is prevented. The result is that the smooth muscle cells relax, which causes peripheral arteries to widen (vasodilation), reduces the workload on the heart, (force needed for the heart to pump blood around the body), increases oxygen supply to the heart, and decreases blood pressure. Calcium channels are concentrated in the region of the heart called the sinus node or pacemaker, where the electrical impulse that stimulates contraction of the heart is generated; also the atrio-ventricular node, which controls the conduction of the electrical impulse and co-ordinates heart beat. The action of verapamil in Isoptin Injection (Verapamil) helps prolong the conduction of these electrical impulses to restore normal heart beat and heart rhythm, which protects against tachycardia (rapid heart beat) and arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) respectively.
